H.S JUNIORS SHOULD START COLLEGE APPS NOW

A few days ago, I received a call from a high school senior who asked if I could help him. He needed help with his essay.  I listened to what he had to say....  At the end of his story,  I asked him how many essays he had written,,  " W-E-L-L...... none" he replied with college apps due in about three weeks... at least for the University of California.. " I have a couple of more weeks to complete  of  the others." he went on to say.

"I have talked to department heads at USC"  he exclaimed as though it was an acceptance...  I had to break to break the news that we had to first figure out who he was and then  look at colleges...  " we must match you to the school... not the school to you"---  and so we will be working feverishly for the next 3-5 weeks putting his applications in.   We talked about letters of recommendation.. " My counselor told me it is a form letter that they send electronically"   Maybe hers is, but  he had no idea of how to ask for letters of recommendations or by whom.... and now most schools are the Naviance E-Doc system.

What about test scores?  Luckily,  all was complete... but we still had to prepare on submitting the scores.

Have you toured schools?...." Well two I have seen"...he said in a confused way.....  I told to go online and tour schools get a feel for where he was going to apply.  He had no idea if the schools he was looking at were right for him or even offered they even offered his major.


So---- ATTENTION JUNIORS!  If you are preparing for college.. now is the time to start your college applications now!  Now is the time to take your SAT or ACT s---    now is time  to  take the  SAT subject tests.--- as well as the AP tests.   Now is the to start looking at schools, and to look towarrd college essays. Don't wait till it is too late and lose out on an opportunity of a life time. The 11th grade will be stressful, but this is when the bulk of the work has to be done.  Every year students wait till they are starting the applications before calling for help.  The best applications are the ones that are given time and thought too.

One Vote is America’s largest teen-centered mock election. Since the first OneVote in 1992, Channel One News’ viewers have predicted the eventual winner of the U.S. presidential election every time.

It’s simply a fun way for teens to get involved in the electoral process and express their collective opinion on the vitally important matter of the presidency. That said, we consider OneVote to be a very important program and, accordingly, take it very seriously.

ARE YOU A HELIOCOPTER PARENT?

My ex-husband left both my son and I six months after his birth.  I knew it had unset my son as he tried to keep him around as long as he could.  Nothing could convince him, he had met someone new.

There was a lot of guilt that I experienced, and when he was about 16, I learned about " Heliocopter  Moms"  What was that I wondered?

I was told it was parents who held on so tightly to their children that the child was unable to learn techniques that they needed to acquire in order to grow up and be responsible children.  I began to worry that I could easily fall into this category,  My son was my whole life, along with our dog,  but as a single parent, I had to work, maintain a household, and do a lot more than just watch my child.  I even got extremely exhausted, and sometimes I just could not do anymore.
 
I watched closely from a distance, and tried to guide him through each new chapter of his life, as I had felt all alone growing up and out in the dark not sure where to turn.  It was very difficult for me to talk to my parents, and in order to offer more support,   I sometimes over stepped the boundaries.

They day we arrived at college where my son was going to attend, I had to encounter my first painful event..... we get to the auditorium where he will sign up for classes, and I am turned away at the door, being told that I get to sit under a tree while he goes in and picks his first year, first quarter classes.  It was the first time I was not there to help him navigate his life to avoid painful and costly mistakes.

My heart sunk to the floor.. I no longer counted, my child was an adult as far as the school was concerned.  So off I went, with my head down low,  alone to sit under a tree.  Once there, I began to talked to other parents who were going through the same grief experience, and at the same time we all realized we had to let go, they were adults, yes, but adults with not the best common sense yet. It was a grueling experience.  A new chapter of my life was now before me.

After a tearful good bye where I tried to be strong,  I had to spend my first night alone in a hotel room before leaving in the early morning.  It was even worse driving nearly 500 miles home alone.  When I got home, it was only me and the dog and entering into an empty house felt cold.


What I am sure of is that I am not at all alone in this process.  What I have learned since that year is that while students are preparing for college and going through the transition, parents need to prepare themselves for what is to come.

When we work with students, we also work with families to prepare for the college transition.  It is not only the child that has to make a new transition, so does the family.  There is one less chair at the dinner table... one less shower, and one less homework or essay to be concerned about.  There are less people in the house, and the laugher that you heard everyday is now no more.

Parents are protective today because of all the uncertainty that we encounter in our daily lives.  Our society has a lot of issues to cope with, but heliocoptering over a child is very unhealthy not only for the child, but for the parent as well.  We all have to let our children go and be their own person one day.

This past week, along with the 1st Presidential Debate in Denver, we were there to learn how to better serve students at the 2012 NACAC Conference.   We also got to tour THE UNIVERSITY OF DENVER and THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO, BOULDER.

This is a time when we all come together from all over the world, and share ideas, thoughts, and learn from our peers on the latest developments or see new products that can be used to assist us in helping students transition from High School or Community College to a 4-year school.
  
This convention was made up of College Admissions Officers, High School Principals, College Counselors, College Consultants ( like us),  SAT/ACT Tutors, and Companies that provide products to enhance the college application process.

The Value of this to Students and Families is that we are able to share with you first hand information that we have discovered or learned about as a result of going to a convention like this.  Often, School Counselors are not able to attend due to budget cuts,   and this is how a consultant can assist you and your school counselor in the college admissions process.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS ARE MISLEAD BY INTERNATIONAL AGENTS

In recent months, college admissions consultants have been warned about how some international agents ( not all)... are pushing international students to schools where they do not belong in order to gain a maximum payday at the end and get greater kick backs.

College is suppose to be a rewarding and fruitful experience for a student who is age 18-23, and seen as a period of transition.  However, when we meet international students we find that they do not know how they got to where they are and had been hoping for a better experience.

It is felt that the US is getting a lot of students from China today because they do not have enough colleges and universities in their own country for students to attend.  Their parents are anxious, just as US families are about the dreams they have for their children.

It is important that if you are or know of a student that is applying to a US college that you help them connect with a college admissions consultant in the US who can properly guide them into a school where they can grow as an individual and leave with fond memories.

Today, the largest number of immigrants coming into the US are those from Asian Countries, and likewise, we are in Asia helping to promote the US.

CHINA WANTS TO SEND STUDNTS TO THE US!

 We are back form the national convention that took place during the presidential debate on the University of Denver Campus this past week.. It was one of thSe most successful conventions of recent years.

The most notable point of the trip was how many high school principals, agents and others traveled from China to this convention to participate.  I was even impressed with some of these people coming to Denver and they could barely speak a word of English, yet they tried to communicate with the admissions officers of several school about their students.


There are many students right now applying to college, and I am sure they are measuring their ability to get into a school by those of their friends.  This is a huge myth students have.. students applying to colleges are really competiting for a spot against other students from around the world, and no one knows for sure where the chips will fall.  You may find that a student how has a 2.93 gets in and you with a 3.93 gets denied.  GRADES, SCORES, and EXTRA CURRICULAR are not the sole things colleges look at... they look at many many factors to make up a freshman class.

If you are applying to a college, watch this video by the Director of Admissions from Vanderbilt University.  I think he speaks not only for Vanderbilt but for most colleges across the U. S.  and it is a video students should take note of.

2012 Admissions Decisions at The Top Universities Across Americas

As we are preparing to meet the Presdential Debate Activities in Denver,. Colorado later today on the eve before the National Association of College Admissions Consultants starts their annual convention,  we have found a New York Times article that outlines  the numbers of applications verses the number of acceptances of the class of 2012 to some of the Top Tier Schools across America.

While we endorse the idea that students should do your best and know there is a school for you out there, you will note that weather you are looking to a top tier Ivy League School or a California School,  the chances of getting in are on average, 1:6, and for UC Schools it can be as high as 1:13.

This why college choice is so very important.  If you know the schools you are applying to, and they define you,  there is a strong chance that admissions officers will see it, and offer you a letter of acceptance.

So. COLLEGE ESSAYS ARE NOT ENGLISH CLASS COMPOSITIONS

It is at this time of year as students who are applying to college are looking at the college essays for the first time. Some are in shock with how broad the questions are and have no idea about what to write about.

College Counselors and English Teachers will spend some time with the students and help you remember how to form a 3-point essay.  Your family and friends may be happy with what you write and cheer you on, but the one thing they all forget is who this essay is for.

College Admissions Officers are looking at your essay to get to know about you.  It is the only thing that is not scored. It is the only human part of your application.  The essay that you write for your college application is not the same as you would write for your high school english teacher.  It is different.  This is where students and families get stuck.

Admissions officers read thousands of essays each and every year. Their job is to create the next incoming class of freshman.  They are trying to create a common thread among a lot of diversity.
It is not necessarily always about grades, or scores, it is a combination of who you are that gets you a yes, no, or maybe that becomes waitlisted.

Start your college research by going to www.CollegeProwler.com and each school’s web site to find out specifics. Research the departments in which you have a specific interest! Also, go to the school’s website and sign up on the admissions office page so you are in their data base. Go to the department page for the academic area you are interested in and note specific professors, collections, etc.

COLLEGE APPLICATION ERRORS

High School Students are realizing hat the time has come to submit their applications.  Many are just beginning to think about taking their SATs or ACTs.  Some are thinking about Scholarships and Financial Aid as the place to start, and some are so overwhelmed that they are just quitting before they begin.

This is not the best way to start the senior year, however, we take a student from where they are to bring them forward.

If you have not taken the SAT or ACT, better sign up now and have it done by NOVEMBER, 2012.  We recommend that students have all of their SATs and ACTs done by the end of the Junior Year to allow time to take an SAT or ACT again if they want to, or to concentrate on their college applications.

Many are starting to fill out their applications.  Here are the BIG 4 College  Appliication mistakes

Here are the common errs:

1)  Not Following the Instructions on the Application

2) Sending in an IN complete application

3) Redundantct

4) Sending too many letters of Recommendation

Today,  there is about 1 counselor for each 810 students,  With Education cuts,  this number could go higher.  There is not the time to give a student the true time they need for this process, and with busy parents working each day, the stress is increased.

Students are stressing out!  Parents can help their students by letting them complete the applications on their own, and writing their own essays and create their own resumes.  Colleges expect that someone will edit the material and double check grammar and spelling.  Parents can help in watching deadlines, (and there are plenty),  create a calendar and keep messages or a calendar book along with everything else in one area of the house.  

Don't. t add stress to a child, and take a moment out for some fun now and then.Many kids are burning the candle at both ends and at some point there is going to be a break.  Minimize this!

Well , take note!  According to  kcbs newsl  college admissions offices are now looking at facebook pages of applicants.

CBS news today reports that college admissions officers are now looking at the facebook page of an incoming class.  Your ON LINE reputation could put you at risk of not accepting a student.  10% of the admissions representatives are checking  is now being used evaluated a student .  Not all schools are using social media, but some do.

So keep these ideas in mind

Are you posting your grandmother would be proud of?

Are your old post cleaned up?.

Have you set your accounts to "personal"?

Have you set your accounts to private?

as you are submitting your applications this year, check what is out there by looking to see how y times you come up on social media!

Worrying about College Essays?

I have been to a lot of informational discussions that talk about the "good old college essay", and I always come away feeling always  the same.....EMPTY---   no one REALLY can explain the core of the essay, and everyone wanted to hear something they could sink their teeth into.  For me,  it is really sad because it is the MOST important, Most Crucial, and MOST time consuming part of the entire process and worse, one essay is not enough!

The process of preparing for college  really needs to start in the 9th grade.  This is the time when a student should be mapping out their plans.  It might sound early, but it is not.  It does not mean you can not go if you dont start in the 9th grade, it just means that the longer you wait, the mose stress it will cost you and your family.

By the end of the 11th grade the ideal student should have taken all of their SATs, ACTs, AP Subject Tests, and be ready to look to college apps.  Doing this in the 12th grade like in the old days is too lateApplications start around the 15th of September if not a little sooner.

Right now, High School Seniors should be have their essays complete and be on the application process.  Schools have deadlines, and if you miss the deadline, you are our out till the next year, so deadlines are critical.

I can promise you that many students have not begun their essays, are not sure which schools are right.  I hear a lot of students say,  "I want to go to college, but I dont think I could get in".  Waiting is not going to help.  If you think you have learning issues, talk to someone.  If you are looking to play a sport and have not been recruited, talk to someone.  If you dont know what to do next, talk to someone.

If you are one of these students and you are beginning to sweat bullets about the admissions process, we are here to help you.  We work with students and create strategies on how to get in, and get through college.  Not every student is right for the big Ivy or California Schools, but that does not mean that college is out of the question, it means that you have to find the school that will meet your needs. But he is some advice... rule out FOR PROFIT schools.  They love to mislead you.

FOR PROFIT schoosls, like the University of Phoemix, National Univ ersity, etc. are schools to avoid because they costs more than the most expensive school in the country... George Washington University in Washington DC, and they offer you a 4th tier education.

Schools you want to look at are NON-Profits.  There are schools that have admissions officers who are in admissions, not sales reps.

Check Early Policies Carefully and Maximize your Chance

We are often asked to explain the many application options.  It’s confusing and changes every year. Hard to know what the difference is between “early action” and “early action single choice.”  Figuring out the difference between Early Decision 1 or 2 can be confusing. Now, as you probably know, UVA, Princeton, and Harvard have gone back to an early option (restricted) meaning students can NOT apply to Harvard in the early round AND a binding early decision school. 

 

You do not want to get caught violating these policies so be sure to read the fine print at each school. Here is a quick reference list of the main types of early policies with SAMPLE schools in each category:

The moral of the story is, the rules have changed; in recent years and it is your responsibility to read the fine print carefully and stay within the guidelines for every school you choose.

We do, however, urge students to apply with an early strategy. In case you haven't noticed, the general trend has been that MORE kids are applying not just to Ivies, but to Ivy overflow schools like Middlebury, Connecticut College, Haverford, etc. If you love a school, apply EARLY. Middlebury for example fills 40% of its class early. Keep in mind that the top liberal arts colleges are experiencing the same rise in applicants as top Ivies and bigger schools. You don’t want to be in the regular pool – especially at the Ivies as admissions drops to under 10% in regular – see our chart below!

COLLEGE³ is a one day “college fair” event to benefit college bound high school students and parents by educating them about the college application process. JUST RELEASED! USC NOW HAS ON LINE GRADUATE PROGRAMS NOW

Just minutes ago, Max, Nikias, President of USC just announced to the alumni association that USC has developed a global online graduate education enterprise that features academic breadth and economic viability-one that expands educational access broadly, while maintaining all-important standards of academic rigor, integrity, and quality.

Today, roughly 4,800 persons from around the world are enrolled in accredited USC online master's degree programs that span nine different USC schools. Altogether, USC's online education programs reach 5,500 remote students through graduate-level degree programs and executive and continuing education programs. USC faculty have embraced the potential of online graduate education and have
eagerly explored and experimented with models that can engage learners and spark powerful
ideas, fresh insights, and new knowledge. As we continue to implement our economically viable
online education model that was developed a few years ago, we expect to double our enrollment
and degree offerings within the next five years.

The "online degree programs" will use USC's normal admissions standards and charge
regular tuition rates. Other universities are increasingly offering online courses for free, with
scant concern for whether enrollees ever complete a course. Our goal, by contrast, is to ensure
that the educational experience is reserved for only those students with the requisite interest and
ability to meet our faculty's high expectations. Every remote student seeking to pursue a degree
program must meet the regular admissions criteria of the USC School offering the diploma. In
addition, there shall be a careful monitoring of student progress.

USC will not offer online degrees at the undergraduate level. This university does
not intend to join the growing ranks of institutions that seek to franchise undergraduate education
through the Internet or through smaller satellite campuses abroad. The years between 17 and 22,
which coincide with the traditional undergraduate experience, represent a corridor of
transformation, one in which much of a student's identity and many of her lifelong affiliations
are formed. Face-to-face intellectual and creative encounters, inside and outside the classroom,
create the greatest impact. This immersive, undergraduate approach is performed best on a broad
and comprehensive research university campus such as ours, where knowledge is continually
created, tested, and challenged within a dynamic residential community. Technology will
enhance, but not replace, the traditional campus undergraduate educational experience.

USC Rossier's Master of Arts inTeaching online program, which received the 2011 International Award for Innovative Practices in Higher Education in Washington, D. C., successfully places some 90 percent of its graduates inmeaningful employment positions or advanced study. Spouses of military service-members areexpressing gratitude for the ability to pursue quality graduate education in social work despitethe prospect of frequent relocation.

About 200 persons have signed up for the special health insurance program we established last year for remote students. Online and hybrid program students are creating their own USC student organizations, affiliating with on-campus organizations, and even trying out for the Trojan Marching Band.  In addition, hundreds of online students and their families now proudly participate in our spring commencement ceremonies.They are becoming, in all respects, full and valued members of the Trojan Family.

As colleges and universities gear up for another school year, new freshmen are anxious and nervous as well as excited about their new ventures.  Parents, if this is their first child going off to college are quickly learning that YOUR CHILD IS AN ADULT, and parents have to sit under a tree while little Johnny who is now an adult, can register for his classes alone without any help.  It's a maddening experience, yet we all see the good in it, and as parents we try to quickly adjust.

THE JOB MARKET MAY NOT BE AS IT APPEARS

 In a recent study completed by the MANPOWER GROUP,  it appears that the job market may not be as it seems, in fact you might be surprised to learn of something called the “Job Paradox.”

 The paradox refers to the fact that even though unemployment rates remain high (8.1% in the US and 11% in California),  a very large number of jobs that are available,  remain unfilled.

As the chart next to us illustrates , there is a dynamic that  is contining into 2012-2013 for a payroll when the number of jobs available are going unfilled.  During the recession  it is no surprise that we had fewer job openings and people were left  unemployed. However,  the right hand side of the graph acknowledges that as we are  moving further and further away from the recession many jobs remain unfilled, dispite that so many continue to look for work.  So, what accounts for this?

When the Manpower Group questioned employers about the applicants that they were interviewing,  many employers said that they were not finding the right kind of applicants; and they needed to find individuals who possessed the right knowledge and skills required by their job openings.  On the other side of the coin,  many of the individuals who they did find to be suitable were/are not able to just up and relocate for new positions as quickly and easily as they might have been able to in the past.   Employers felt that  they had to take into account the tough housing and tight credit markets. There was also no doubt that in a this tough economy, many companies were/are choosing to leave positions unfilled rather than to hire and train someone without the right knowledge and skills.  Companies want to wait till the markets are stronger.

So what can a high school or college student, or job seeker do?  Well,  a series of focus groups were held by a research company consisting of hiring managers and directors from a variety of industries in the Los Angeles area. What they learned was that employers do recognize the value of a college education, additional training, and additional certifications.

In these focus groups, hiring managers and HR personnel stated that when they saw or see  certificates in a concentrated area, it demonstrates to them that the individual applying for the position is showing the companies that have continued to be productive and to keep themselves continually up to date in the latest ideas and practices by going through a robust, rigorous, relevant, and focused education.

The individuals in the focus group expressed that "an individual who completes a certificate is seen as someone who is prepared, motivated, engaged, and “willing to go the extra mile.” To these people,  these are elements that will fill the gap between what an employer is seeking and what an applicant can bring to an organization.

Top Tier School Marketing Statistics

CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITIES (CSU) ARE CHANGING THEIR POLICIES

Today. The Board of Trustees of the California State University announced that there will be a change in admissions in the system.   First and foremost, there is a FREEZE on college transfers at this time.   As of 2013,  students who choose to transfer to a Cal State Campus will find transferring will be a little more difficult, particularly at the Northridge, Long Beach and Dominguez Hills campuses.


No longer will college transfers be allowed to transfer mid term.  Additionally, the Board says that college transfers will only be allow to transfer if they have an AA degree.


What does this mean for students?  A lot.


Most students want to get into and out of college.  There is no better time that in that 18-23 year old period of transition.  However, this change means that students must be very focus if they choose to attend a CSU campus.  It may take a student longer to get through college, and students should consider looking at a 5-6 years.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE ACADEMIC INDEX IS?

Have you ever wondered what your Academic Index is?   Well, the  AI is a formula which is what is commonly called combines the averages of student test scores (both SAT I’s and SAT II’s) and the  high school GPA and divides by the class ranking.

Although the Top Tier schools have spent many years denying they used any kind of formula for their calculations on how to admit students,, the fact is that they have been using a ranking formula since the 1950’s called the Academic Index.  This formula, often called AI for short, has been around a long time and is used predominantly to make sure that athletes recruited to the school meet the minimum academic criteria that is ultimately reviewed by the NACC.


Most student never hear about this term unless they are applying to Division I or Division II Schools.  While this calculation has traditionally been used for sports purposes; maintaining some kind of academic standard on the various athletic teams, every school still calculates an AI for every student in order to assess their athletes for the NACC.

Why? Because the average AI of each member on an athletic team cannot be more than one standard deviation away from the average AI of the entire class  The only way a college or university  to know and show if questioned is to calculate an AI for every student.

The AI is represented on a scale of 1-240, with 240 being the highest.  There is a high level of correlation between the AI rank and acceptance rates. Applicants with 8 and 9 rankings were accepted at over 90% of the time. Half of the 6-ranked applicants were accepted, while a mere 11% of the 4-ranked were could still place in the acceptance poo. Virtually no students with a 1 ranking are admitted,  and these numbers do not include any outside achievements, awards, or any other positive information, the system is only used as it relates to grades. 

Since the number was so easy to produce, many schools begun to print the number right on the front of every student’s folder and used it to help them rank the student academically. It also creates a ranking to show that the athlete is capable of playing his or her sport.

REMEMBER:  The AI is just a statistical tool that is used for a specific purpose. The majority of students do not need to be concerned with the AI.   It does not take into account a student’s essay(s), teacher recommendations, or letters of recommendation.

If you must, you can find on line AI calculators to see where you fall,  but be careful--  it is only an informational tool used, and hold no merit to you the student  UNLESS you are going to be an athlete.

Important Note: the Academic Index is not used by all elite colleges and even those that may consider other factors, like extracurricular achievements, recommendations, and essays, equally or even more important as pure academics. Use with caution!
