Many people ask us "why is a college admissions consultant necessary?" They wait till the end of the 11th grade, or until is almost too late in the 12th grade to even get started on the process. Many parents find it hard to believe that if their student has good grades, and good scores, what the big deal is.
The big deal is that many more students are applying for college thus making the competition even steeper. If you look at the UC application, nothing has changed much in the past 50 or so years, EXCEPT that the mere number of students applying is driving the competition for some very limited spots.
Students and their families should have a consultant at their side because a consultant is the buffer that helps students and their families survive one of the most stressful times in a student's life. Working with so many students, a consultant can see ways to deal with situations more effectively.
Today, schools not only want to see you are a good student, they want to know why you think their school should admit you. It is easy to say that, but look at the
lateest numbers just released for the Ivy League and West Coast Colleges on their Admission Statistics for Class of 2009
THE IVIES:
Brown
Applied 16,911
Admit 2,557
Columbia
Applied: 18,125
Accepted: 2,312
Cornell
Applied: 24,452

Harvard

Princeton

Yale

MIT

Total number of applicants to all Ivy Schools was 149,825, and out of that number only 23,366 were accepted. In some cases, this is a less than 1 in 10 chance of getting in.
On the west coast, USC has gotten harder to get into than UCLA. Stanford and Berkeley still have very limited spots, and schools that 10 years ago were slam dunks to get into are now considered reach schools like Loyola-Marymount University. The latest numbers for these schools as follows:
Stanford
Applied: 20,195
Admitted: 2,426
USC
Applied: 30,000
Accepted: 4,000
UCLA
Applied: 45,000
Accepted: 8,000
